Village Rides

A growing network of riverside recreation trails will eventually connect to provide safe, off-road cycling options. For now they are a series of short stand-alone trails. We recommend them as a great place to explore with young children.

As shared paths, riders are likely to come across walkers so please keep left and share with care.

Road Rides

The Wairoa Valley offers a variety of on-road cycling experiences and is a popular destination for solo and group riders.

From the 8km village loop for beginners (village to Monument Road, Tourist Road, McNicol Road and back to the village),

After some hill work? Twilight Road and Otau Mountain Road provide some excellent elevations to push yourself.

After some distance? The 110km Tour de Ranges course is an excellent loop ride for experienced riders that takes you out to the Seabird Coast. Check the wind direction before you ride - a tail wind on those last 30kms is always appreciated

An Epic Day Out

If you’re after a real challenge, consider taking on the 44km Hūnua Traverse. Start in Clevedon and cycle all the way to Kaiaua on the Seabird Coast, via the Hūnua Ranges Regional Park on this Heartland Ride. The reverse route (Kaiaua to Clevedon) is slightly less challenging.

The majority (30km) of the Traverse follows Watercare’s service roads within the Hūnua Ranges Regional Park. With some steep gradients, sharp corners and big hill climbs, the Traverse provides a fantastic gravel riding experience.

With camping options along the route, it’s also an excellent option for bikepackers travelling between Auckland and Waikato.

Private shuttle options are available to ferry you to the other end. Bookings are essential.

Opening hours and access points will vary, check the website for more information.
