Celebrating our improved pedestrian safety
A new pedestrian crossing has been installed in the heart of our village. To all the locals who have tirelessly campaigned for this outcome over the decades - thank you. It’s wonderful to see the fruits of your labour. With our population set to expand to over 5000 residents, the number of people walking around our community will continue to grow. Let’s keep them safe.
The type and location of pedestrian safety devices proposed for Clevedon were determined by AT following traffic counts and pedestrian behaviour observations as part of a village wide pedestrian safety study.
Evidence shows that people only use pedestrian crossings where they are conveniently located and the specific location of our new pedestrian crossing was determined by AT as the only suitable location in the heart of Clevedon. The old kerb extensions outside the cemetery were ruled out as they were located too far away from pedestrian ‘desire lines’ to be considered viable. While two car parks have sadly been lost outside the Superette and Clevedon Takeaways shop, the removal of the old kerb extensions has actually opened up 2+ more parking opportunities 40m to the north, so the total number of available car parks has been preserved.
In recent years, AT has required pedestrian crossings to be raised. Raised tables were previously installed in Clevedon as traffic calming devices but were later broadly removed due to the noise generated by trucks and trailers crossing them, negatively impacting amenity. Clevedon has a significantly higher proportion of heavy vehicles travelling though our village than other communities, so this at-grade pedestrian crossing has been designed to maintain amenity while also improving opportunities for safe crossing.
As the community adjusts to this new pedestrian safety device, we ask users to take care extra care and to chat to young walkers and drivers about how to safely navigate this crossing -
Drivers, please approach with caution. When parking in proximity to the new kerb extensions, please park as close to the kerb as possible to maintain safe sight lines. Additional lines and wheel stops will be installed by AT in coming weeks to help guide car parking.
Pedestrians, did you know that legally you must use a pedestrian crossing if you are within 20m of one? Stop, look and listen before you step out and never assume that drivers have seen you at the crossing. Make eye contact with a driver (if possible) before crossing to ensure they’ve seen you.
Additional kerb extensions and a pedestrian refuge have also been installed on North Road. Designed to reduce distances for pedestrians wishing to cross at the top of the school and to better serve the Clevedon North community and those accessing the Taitaia Stream trail, they also narrow the lane width to slow vehicles as they approach the school. It is vital that people do not park on the yellow lines. These no parking areas have been measured to allow safe transit of buses and heavy vehicles. There is ample parking available north of the new pedestrian refuge kerb extension.
